Ex-cop jailed for drug dealing in Port Shepstone
Three years later, and the constable has been brought to book.
A former police constable was sentenced on drug-related charges in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on March 24.
Dilan Jama (27) was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for dealing in cannabis.
Half of the sentence was suspended for five years, on condition that he does not commit the same offence during the suspension period.
Warrant Officer Sibu Ncane, spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, said the sentencing followed a 2023 Hawks operation triggered by intelligence indicating that a police officer attached to Port Shepstone Saps was involved in selling cannabis.
An intensive investigation was launched, during which two undercover agents made contact with the accused.
“A controlled purchase was conducted and Jama sold cannabis worth R8 000 to the officers,” said Ncane.
A subsequent take-down operation led to Jama’s arrest on October 30, 2023, and he was released on bail of R2 000.
After multiple court appearances, Jama was found guilty and sentenced.
In addition, he was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
