Policeman charged with extortion in Port Shepstone
He was caught while accepting R1000 from the complainant.

A police officer assigned to the Margate Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) made a brief appearance on an extortion charge at the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on May 8, where he was released on R3000 bail.
The case was postponed to June 22.
He was arrested by members of the Hawks Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit on May 7.
Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Sibu Ncane said that on April 22, police received a complaint alleging that a police officer was demanding money from an individual in exchange for not making an arrest.
“The complainant reported that he was informed that the police officer was investigating a theft case despite being stationed at the Margate FCS. The complainant further stated that on April 1, he paid the police officer R850 in cash and on April 30, he contacted him again demanding R1000 or face arrest,” said Ncane.
The matter was referred to the Hawks, prompting an intensive investigation. Hawks obtained Section 252A approval for an undercover operation. The operation was conducted resulting in the police officer being caught red-handed while accepting R1000 from the complainant. He was arrested and charged with extortion.
