Scottburgh court sentences reckless motorists
98% of prosecuted cases brought by RTI Park Rynie have resulted in guilty verdicts.
The KZN Department of Transport continues to record successful convictions of reckless motorists in various courts throughout KZN.
At the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court in particular, 98% of prosecuted cases brought by RTI Park Rynie have resulted in guilty verdicts.
The court recently finalised the following cases: Brian Rawthee was sentenced to a fine of R20 000 or two years in prison for driving at 179km/h; Nash Lee Govender received a fine of R15 000 or 10 months in prison for driving at 171km/h; and Fanyana Makhanya was sentenced to a fine of R10 000 or eight months in prison for driving at 171km/h.
The MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, said the high conviction rate for speeding and drunk driving cases are as a result of an integrated approach involving the National Prosecuting Authority, Saps, and the KZN Department of Health.
“We will continue to work together to remove reckless motorists from our road networks,” he said.
