N2 hitchhiker robbed of belongings between Park Rynie and Durban

Police warn the public to be extra vigilant with regard to their safety during this busy time and warn against hitchhiking.

A man (38) was robbed while hitchhiking on the N2 freeway from Park Rynie to Durban recently.

The driver of a white Hyundai i10 offered him a lift, and once he was inside, the doors were locked, and he was forced at knifepoint to transfer money to a cell number.

He was then robbed of his cellphone and router and dropped off in Umgababa, where he sought help.

The public is warned about the dangers of hitchhiking, as it puts you in a vulnerable position and at the mercy of those with criminal intent.

Your safety is at risk as there is no guarantee that an unknown driver will take you safely to your destination.

Criminals are opportunistic and will not hesitate to rob unsuspecting persons of valuables such as cellphones, cash, and expensive clothing items. Women, some hitchhiking with young children, are even more vulnerable and easy targets to be robbed or worse. After being robbed, a person may be left in a deserted area to find their way home or to the nearest police station.

Drivers who offer unknown persons a lift are also at risk of being held up with a weapon and hijacked, or robbed of their possessions.

Police warn the public to be extra vigilant with regard to their safety during this busy time, and warn against hitchhiking. Do not put your life at risk while trying to save on travelling expenses.
