Police believe criminals are targeting unsuspecting shoppers at malls and shopping centres.

In one case, a woman had her wallet, containing cash, driver’s licence and bank cards, stolen from her handbag on July 3.

She only discovered the theft when she reached the till to pay and found her handbag unzipped.

In another incident on July 24, a shopper visited a popular clothing store at a shopping centre.

When she arrived home, she realised her cellphone had been stolen from her handbag.

Police continue to warn the public about scams, including fraudulent investment schemes, purchases made through social media, and paying deposits for rental properties without first viewing the property or verifying the owner’s identity.

Despite these warnings, many people continue to fall victim to fraudsters.

Shoppers are urged to remain aware of their surroundings and be alert to anyone following them through store aisles, standing unusually close, or attempting to distract them.

Keep handbags zipped and close to your body at all times, and never leave them unattended in a shopping trolley.
