As many motorists are aware, KZN was the first province to roll out the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) Phase 2 Demerit Point System.

On August 2, MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma said that hundreds of motorists have already been served with infringement notices, and many are accounting for their misbehaviour on the roads by paying fines within 32 days.

“We wish to remind the people of KZN that our excellent road networks were not constructed for law-breakers. As we transition to Phase 4 of AARTO, the Road Traffic Inspectorate continues to sustain convictions and the sentencing of motorists who are breaking traffic rules,” said Duma.

With the intervention of Park Rynie RTI and Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court, the following convictions and sentencing were recently secured: Bhekabantwana Zulu was sentenced to a fine of R12 000 or six months in prison for driving at 180km/h; Sizwe Gervais Sawoni was sentenced to a fine of R12 000 or six months in prison for driving at 181km/h; Mhlengi Madlala was sentenced to a fine of R12 000 or six months in prison for driving at 173 km/h; and Thokozani Sodume was sentenced to a fine of R12 000 or six months in prison for driving at 173km/h.

All the accused opted to pay their fines.
