MK Party members marched to Gamalakhe police station last Friday to support Bongani Gcaba in opening a defamation of character case.

Gcaba opened a case after he and his party were called hooligans by the speaker for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, Phumlani ‘Mapu’ Gumbi.

This happened at a community hall opening in Gamalakhe two weeks ago, where a heated argument between Gumbi and municipal employee Gcaba was caught on video and trended on social media.

At the time, Gcaba had questioned why no community members were present, as the hall was for the community, and why people were not invited.

In the video, Gcaba is emotional and loud, asking why the community was not informed about such an important project.

That is when Gumbi shouted and called Gcaba and his political party (MKP) hooligans.
Spokesperson for the party, Nelisiwe Ngubane, said the march to the police station was to support Gcaba.

“Gumbi violated Gcaba’s human rights and humiliated him in public. As a leader and speaker, he should respect people and other political parties.”

Ngubane said that Gcaba has opened a case and the party would like to see the speaker appear in court.

Meanwhile, Gumbi was asked about the pending case; however, he said he had no idea about it and that he had not been contacted.

Ugu District Saps was contacted for comment, but none was received at the time of going to press.
