Margate shooting victim identified as political leader

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Nelisile Xolo (43) was killed in an apparent drive-by shooting in the Margate CBD on August 7.

The shooting happened on Marine Drive at about 20:00, where Xolo was allegedly seated in a white Toyota Hilux when an unknown shooter opened fire.

KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service advanced paramedics responded to the scene and found the man had sustained 14 gunshot wounds.

He was declared dead at the scene.

A murder case is under investigation at Saps Margate, and no arrests have been made, so far.

In a statement released by the ANC Alfred Nzo Region it said that it’s deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Xolo.

“Xolo was ambushed in the late hours of Friday by a gunman who riddled his body with bullets. It is unclear at this point what the motive of the attack was; however, police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.”

Xolo is a former regional chairperson of the ANC Youth League in Alfred Nzo Region, current district treasurer of SACP and ANC branch chairperson of Nonqulana branch, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela subregion.

“He committed his life to the liberation struggle until his very last days. His youthful days were defined by his radical stance and defiance against injustice. He will be remembered as an upright man who at all times stood firm in the face of adversity for a revolutionary cause,” the statement read.

ANC Alfred Nzo Region extended heartfelt condolences to the family and comrades of Xolo, his wife and children.
