The Democratic Alliance (DA) announced its ward councillor candidates under Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) at the Saint Views Holiday Resort recently.

Some candidates are familiar faces as current councillors, and some are new.

The DA is standing for councillor positions from Port Edward to Hibberdene, including inland.

The party’s second Deputy Chairperson, Sakhile Mngadi, said selection panels evaluated candidates over 18-months.

“It was approved by provincial leadership and underwent scrutiny at national leadership, so candidates have had comprehensive tests which they have passed, and that is why we are proud.”

According to Mngadi, the DA hopes to take over RNM and improve it, as it did in Umngeni Municipality.

He said the party has governed Umngeni for five years and people can see change.

Mayoral candidate Leon Garbade said a lot needs to be done in RNM.

He added that service delivery is a priority and the DA will ensure that everyone receives it.

“The team that I am leading is accountable and can do the job. They are ready for it – the South Coast and RNM have been promised a lot for a long time; we are not promising, but we are saying what we can do.”
