Setback for Mtentu bridge project

Work on the R1.63 billion Mtentu bridge began in November 2017 and it was originally expected to be completed in 2020/21.

The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has admitted that challenges surrounding the Mtentu bridge have caused a major setback in the N2 Wild Coast project.

This after contractor Aveng Strabag Joint Venture (ASJV) announced that the companies had terminated their contract with Sanral, citing ongoing protest action and threats.

Sanral spokesman, Vusi Mona said Sanral was now looking abroad for companies to complete the project.

This was because of the size and complexity of the multi-billion rand bridge, he added.

He stressed that due to the complexity of the project, South African companies could not be considered and any new consortium or joint venture would need to include an international partner with the appropriate experience and expertise.

Work on the R1.63 billion Mtentu bridge began in November 2017 and it was originally expected to be completed in 2020/21, with construction lasting for a period of 40 months.

The first of this magnitude in South Africa, the bridge will be one of the longest main span balanced cantilever bridges in the world when completed.

It will be some 220m high and will span 1.1km.

Mr Mona could not say when a new contractor would be appointed.
