‘She cared greatly for animals’: Remembering Elaine Steabler
She dedicated many years to helping animals in need on the coast.
Animal activist Elaine Steabler of Sunwich Port, who died recently after a short illness bravely borne, will be missed by many, especially those who worked with her to help animals in need.
Elaine lived in Paris and London for a time, working at the Opera House in London before returning to South Africa.
When she first moved to the coast in 2008, she saw a need to rescue, sterilise and re-home animals.
Initially, she worked under the umbrella of Durban Animal Anti Cruelty League, but later founded non-profit organisation, Hibiscus Animal Welfare (HAW).
Over the years, she worked tirelessly to care for abandoned and abused animals.
In June 2009, Corrine Saunders opened the upmarket Spillers Charity Shop, primarily to provide funds for HAW.
The public was supportive from day one, providing a never-ending stream of good quality goods to sell.
There was also a fantastic group of ‘Spillers girls’ who volunteered at the shop.
It was a time of hard work, mingled with fun, laughter and occasional heartache.
In 2020, after 11 wonderful years at Spiller’s Charity Shop, the team of volunteers handed the baton to Penny Taylor of Harmony Hill.
Elaine had a passion for animal welfare and never missed a chance to help one of God’s creatures.
