Scouting for a brighter future
When scouting thrived it was largely due to an efficient school system, where schools offered their premises and teachers were allocated to run troops.
There was a time in Port Shepstone, more especially in Marburg, when the sight of young boys clad in khaki uniforms was a common one.
Boy Scouts have always enjoyed a curious and ambivalent relationship with society. Today they are a rare sight. But there are attempts to revive the Boy Scout movement in Port Shepstone.
The 1st Port Shepstone Boy Scouts holds an open day at the Girl Guide and Boy Scout Hall at 29 Mitchell Drive, Port Shepstone this Saturday (20th) at 09:00. A group of locals are hoping to revive the Scouts and are looking for volunteers, sponsors, parents and ex-Scouters to support them.
“If you have a son aged six and older consider the Cubs and Scouts programme as an activity and you will be empowering him with life skills beyond measure. Some activities include camping, hiking, sports woodcraft, swimming and much more,” said Scout Group Leader Ronald Mark.
The Scouts and Cubs will be sharing premises with the Girl Guides.

Prayer dates
The Shree Raam Narayan Temple Society will observe Sri Krishna Janmashtami today (18th) from 18:00 until midnight. All are welcome.
The temple will also observe Sri Ganesh Chaturti on Wednesday, August 31 from 18:00.
A reminder that Pithar Paksh starts on September 10 and ends on September 25.

AGM

Fun day
St Martin de Porres School is hosting a family fun day at the school grounds this Saturday (20th) from 07:00. It’s a fun-filled day for the whole family. There will be loads of entertainment. Entry to the grounds is R10.
Child Welfare
Child Welfare SA – Port Shepstone will host its 24th AGM at the Port Shepstone Country Club on Thursday, August 25 at 17:30 for 18:00. All are welcome to attend.
