Graduate attributes success to gran’s encouragement
Nomzamo Mbambo worked and focused on her studies although it was challenging at times.
Graduate Nomzamo Mbambo who was born in eNyangwini, Mthwalume says she can’t wait to find a job with her education degree, so that she can make her 85-year-old grandmother Thokozile Toko Mbambo happy.
Mbambo graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree from Unisa recently.
She is currently working at a store in Port Shepstone where she started in 2009, after matric in 2007.
“I started as a packer, and today I am proud to say I am a cashier. I had set a goal to further my studiers and become a graduate one day,” said Mbambo.
She said she used her salary to pay for her tuition which has finally paid off, even though it was challenging.
“It was difficult, there was no money and if it was not for my grandmother who always stood by me and encouraged me, I would not have made it.
“My gran did all the house chores and told me to focus on my studies. She even funded some of my tuition with her pension.”
Mbambo emphasised that her grandmother’s happiness is of utmost importance to her. “I owe her a lot. I would love to see her enjoy the fruits of her investment in me since I was a little girl.
“My mom was unemployed, she had no income and all seven of us grandchildren were dependent on gogo’s grant which at the time was not enough, but she made sure that we attended school,” she added.
Mbambo said growing up the family lived in a one-room house with her grandmother who also ensured no-one went to bed hungry.
“She bought us school uniforms every year and paid school fees . When I matriculated she told me that she didn’t have money to pay for varsity and I had to look for work. I am here today because of her,” Mbambo concluded.
