RNM municipal manager bids farewell

Councilors hopeful that Mbili is considered for a third term as Municipal Manager in Ray Nkonyeni

After having served for over nine years as the municipal manager of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, Max Mbili said his goodbyes to council on Tuesday this week.

Mbili said his term was ending on Wednesday, and from the day he started with the organisation in March 2012, he knew that this day would come.

Caucus leaders from the different political parties described Mbili as a dedicated, hardworking and resilient man, who led by example and was always willing to assist anyone and everyone, no matter how they were affiliated politically.

VF Plus Cllr Rochelle Robbetze could not hold back her tears saying that the way one treats people is important.

“At the end of your journey, where you come from and what you reach in your life is the ultimate motivation for people. Mbili has shown people that if you have a dream and work hard enough you will reach it,” said Robbetze.

She said Mbili is one of the people who played a huge role in her political career, supporting her and helping her find her feet.

In his farewell speech, Mbili said having started working for the community of Port Shepstone as a gardener to his days as municipal manager, his achievements have been the result of attributes made by a collective of people.

“There is nothing wrong with leaving but you need to leave the organisation better than it was before you joined it.

“It would be insufficient not to express my heartfelt and deepest appreciation for the opportunity given to me over the years to serve the people of my home soil. I thank the caucuses of the ANC as the governing party led by the former chief whip, Cllr Gilbert Maphumulo, Cllr Selvan Chetty and the current chief whip Cllr Teddy Hlophe.

He said he has learnt a lot from the people who supported and guided him, producing a polished municipal manager.

“I have always felt part of the organisation through its strategic leadership and guidance, the ‘troikas’ led by the former mayor, Cllr Cynthia Mqwebu and current mayor Cllr Skhumbuzo Mqadi and the guidance from the caucuses of the opposition parties,” he added.

He acknowledged opposition party caucus leaders, Cllr Doug Rawlins and Cllr Sifundo Ngwane who he said both made their caucuses understand that the common objective of the municipality is to empower the people of the South Coast.

He thanked the South Coast Ratepayers Association, Port Shepstone Business Forum, Ugu Business of Association, Margate Business Association, South Coast Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Development Bank of Southern Africa for supporting the municipality through various grants.
