Pet owner, Dave Lucey experienced a horrific ordeal after his dog was mauled to death through his property’s palisade fencing in Oslo Beach.
This incident has highlighted the increased rise in pet owners not taking responsibility to keep their dogs inside their properties.
Reports of people being attacked or having close encounters with vicious stray dogs while walking or running are also becoming more prevalent.
Lucey said his dog named Fang, who was six years old, had put his head through the fence and two dogs (from down the road) had grabbed its head and ripped it apart.
Lucey, who was not at home at the time of the incident, said it was the most traumatising ordeal to come home to.
“You could see on the driveway my severely injured Fang had gone looking for me. It appears after bumping into an object, he collapsed on top of the driveway and then rolled back down,” said a very upset Lucey.
To Lucey’s dismay, the two dogs returned a week later and attempted to attack his other dog through the fence. Luckily, he was home at the time and could intervene.
With the help of Inspector Sidney Pillay from Ray Nkonyeni Municipality‘s Law Enforcement, the owners of the dogs were found, given a warning and fined.
Lucey said it worried him that these wandering dogs could attack and kill a child. “I urge pet owners to keep their dogs inside. Don’t drive off and leave your gate open if you have dogs in the yard,” he said.
Mike Davis of the Lower South Coast SPCA confirmed they had attended to the incident and assisted Lucey during the unfortunate and traumatic incident.
Although the issue of dogs not being confined to their property is an animal-related bylaw, the SPCA works closely with the RNM officers to assist with any problem animals.
Furthermore the LSC SPCA is targeting areas in the community with regards to stray dogs roaming the streets, as well as educating owners.
“Warnings are issued where animal welfare concerns are found,” he added.
Lucey thanked Davis for consoling him, taking away Fang’s body, and giving him a special burial
