Some 50 people took to the Mzimkhulu River to raise funds for the Lower South Coast SPCA and Harmony Hill last Saturday.
The fundraiser was done in memory of Vic Pretorius, the kayak enthusiast who tragically died while paddling on the Mzimkhulu River earlier this year.
The event was called the 70-70-70 animal welfare fundraiser, as Vic had dreamt of paddling 70km to raise R70 000 for his 70th birthday.
Companies, individuals, families and friends got together and managed to paddle the 70km goal.
So far, R15 000 has been raised, but organisers are still collecting outstanding donations.
Event organisers, Mark Lawlor and Lana van Zyl thanked everyone who came out and supported the event.
“Everyone had lots of fun despite the wind. I have even received feedback from first-time kayakers wanting to come back and kayak again.
The market vendors all capitalised on the traffic to Spiller’s Wharf, and the dog show, vaccinations and children’s jumping castle made it a family outing,” said Lawlor.
Mike Davis of the LSC SPCA agreed and said it was a brilliant day with many folks getting their pets vaccinated.
