Outgoing chairman Dougie honoured
In many ways, Dougie Haralambous's name has become synonymous with rugby on the South Coast.
Douglas Mitchell Sports Club held its annual general meeting recently, with outgoing chairman Dougie Haralambous, who is handing over the reins to Dennis Steenmans, running a smooth meeting and presenting a thorough report.
An emotional Dougie, while sad to step down, was pleased to leave the club in good shape and in very capable hands.
While Covid was a great challenge to all, the club has generally done well.
Dougie is proud to see that many of the many of the plans for developments and extensions are become a reality.
He’s also pleased that the club’s new constitution was adapted in March this year, after much input from lawyers and committee members.
He thanked his committee for its support and felt that the new committee, comprising members with much club history, complemented by new younger members, would give a good balance.
Dougie is a passionate sportsman who lives for rugby. He has been involved with the Warriors Rugby Club for many years, as a player, committee member and rugby chairman.
He has been instrumental in the growth of the local rugby club to what it is today.
His passion for the sport has taken him further afield and he represents the Southern KZN Rugby Academy as director.
The new core committee for 2022/23 is: Dennis Steenmans (chairman), Andries Fourie (vice-chairman), Geoff Borchers (treasurer) and Kitty Steenmans (secretary).
Dennis has served on the committee since 1985 and has vast knowledge of the background history of the club.
He wished Dougie all the best in his future endeavours and quality family time, although he knows DMSC will stay close to his heart.
“We appreciate all your hard work and dedication you have put in, not to mention the challenging times during covid. Dougie, your time, and effort didn’t go unnoticed, and you set an excellent example of how a committee should be run.”
Kitty Steenmans, secretary presented Dougie with an honorary award, where he becomes Douglas Mitchell Sports Club’s honorary president – for all his dedication and commitment to the main club.
