Kelso community accepts assistance from municipality
The community is expected to refrain from preventing municipal services going forward.
Umdoni Municipality handed over 150 gel stoves to the Kelso community in an attempt to provide a short-term solution while residents wait for the long-standing electrification conundrum by Eskom to be resolved.
The community accepted the municipality’s assistance and mayor Sibongile Khathi went together with a few members of the executive committee and senior management for the formal handover.
Each household received two gel stoves and the community was updated on Eskom’s electrification plans scheduled to commence in April next year.
“The municipality understands the community’s frustration hence such efforts have been made to provide an alternative that will carry them through till the implementation of the bigger scheme project,” said mayor Khathi.
The municipality has also resumed with the utilisation of its landfill site following the clearing of routes to the site which were illegally closed off for many months by the Kelso residents because of their electricity and service delivery matters.
“This community has conceded to refrain from disrupting municipal services going forward while they wait for the promised electrification project to be implemented in April next year,” added Sphelele Cele, Umdoni communications manager.
