Community pulls together to rescue trapped dog
High praise has been given to the SPCA for their quick response to help.
A lost German Shepherd found perched on a ledge at Uvongo Falls last Saturday, sadly, still remains unclaimed at the Lower South Coast (LSC) SPCA.
Uvongo resident Casandra Love and her partner, Sean Waller were returning from an afternoon walk to the beach, when they spotted the dog from the Uvongo bridge, trapped between the cliffs at Uvongo waterfall, on the rocks below.
“It’s incredible how we spotted her as she blended into the rocks,” added Love.
She said they called a friend who called the LSC SPCA, and trainee field officer Siyabonga Ndlovu arrived within 10 minutes to help.
A local, named JD, also came to assist the couple, along with Uvongo resident, Barry Smit.
Apparently the dog had been seen wandering around on the beach the day before.
“It was a joint rescue operation to get the dog off the rocks and to safely. She wasn’t injured but was nervous and scared, and appeared to be dehydrated and tired. She could barely walk so had to be carried,” said Love.
She explained that the joy and excitement on Ndlovu’s face after he, together with the community helped rescue the trapped dog, was priceless.
“After we got the dog to safety, Ndlovu was so thrilled that we had rescued the dog, it was like he had just opened a Christmas present. He high-fived us, and it was fantastic to see someone with so much energy and passion for animals. I was super impressed with him,” said Love.
Mike Davis of the LSC SPCA said nobody as yet has come forward to claim her, and she is not micro-chipped.
“She is a friendly girl, and is in a fair condition. She apparently has been living in the bush and we tried twice on Saturday to catch her. She will be up for adoption this Saturday after her ‘stray period’ is up,” said Davis.
