Rescue turtle Senzangakhona is doing well

The loggerhead turtle that was recently found by a family between Sea Park and Umtentweni beach is recovering well at uShaka Marine World, where he is currently being rehabilitated.

Ann Kunz from the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) said the turtle is positively buoyant and has a lean body, however is being treated and has been placed in a shallow pool.

“We have also named him Senzangakhona after King Shaka’s father as he seems to be very strong. He is eating well, however we suspect that it may be a female and not male.

“Being a turtle, he has a slow metabolism so we are not sure how long it will take for him to be fully recovered. We are still awaiting blood tests and maybe he will be with us for another two years,” said Kunz.
