New purohits ordained
The four priests are now ambassadors and custodians of the Sanathan Dharma.
In a glamorous, unprecedented function, the Arya Samaj South Africa held a Purohit Ordainment Ceremony recently.
The Port Shepstone Arya Samaj now boasts four newly ordained priests, three of whom are women. The purohits have completed a Diploma in Vedic Studies over a period of three years, which encompasses learning the Sanskrit mantras, recitation of the mantras and engagement in discourses in Vedic Philosophy. In addition, they have undergone intensive practical training in readiness for the ordainment.
The function was attended by the Spiritual Head of the Arya Samaj South Africa, Swami Vedanand together with Swami Maitri, purohits from the Pietermaritzburg and Durban affiliates of the Arya Samaj South Africa and members of the local Hindu community. The ordainment required the ‘trainee’ priests to take their vows and sign a pledge of commitment to abide by the teachings of the Vedas and the rules of the Vedic Purohit Mandal – the purohit wing of the Arya Samaj South Africa, before being robed as purohits.
The purohits will now be able to serve the Hindu community by performing Hawans, ceremonies for the mother and child, blessing for newly obtained homes and businesses, weddings, funerals and spiritual counselling.
