Youth indaba focuses on job creation
Various departments from the public and private sectors did presentations.
Ugu District Municipality held a youth development indaba in Uvongo recently.
Deputy mayor Mandla Chiya said it was to grow the economy of the district through the youth and create job opportunities.
Different departments did presentations. Zekhethelo Mshengu of Ugu spoke on the economy of the district.
Mshengu said that limestone is the biggest mining sector in Ugu currently, and that there are job opportunities in this sector.
She mentioned that the unemployment rate had increased due to the July 2021 unrest where a lot of businesses suffered.
So far, there has only been a 12% increase in investment in the district, which is very low.
Private sector companies also participated in the indaba.
“Our youth has challenges of unemployment, they have qualifications but lack job opportunities, the indaba gave them options,” said Chiya.
He added that with the new developments that are earmarked for the area, there will be job opportunities, especially for the youth.
