For a bold approach, try using two different colours in the same room. For example paint a built-in bookcase green in a room with blue walls. It will highlight the items on the bookcase.
Also, you can create an accent wall to add a focal point.
Painting an accent wall in a vivid hue can add a dramatic edge where the other colours are white or neutral.
Paint low ceilings white to give the illusion of height. While white makes a space feel airy, achieve a similar effect by painting the ceiling a lighter shade of the wall colour.
