It was a gruelling five-and-a-half hour rescue operation by the Lower South Coast SPCA last Friday, after a cow fell down a rocky cliff in Breamer in Kwanzimakwe.
KwaNzimakwe is called a ‘place of the Nzimakwe’ rural village and is accessible off the R69 between Mpenjati Nature Reserve and Ezinqoleni.
Mike Davis of the LSC SPCA said the full inspectorate team responded to a call from a resident.
“The team was also assisted by Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s (RNM) Fire Department. Both teams made their way to rescue the fallen bovine, not really knowing what they would face on arrival,” he said.
The large animal had fallen about 10 metres down a steep, rocky cliff.
Teams had their work cut out for them, and it was an intense and lengthy rescue operation to lift the cow to safety.
“Fortunately the cow had not suffered severe injuries, and after receiving medical care, it was given the all-clear to return home with his owner.”
Davis thanked the RNM Fire Department and community members for working together to rescue the animal.
“Our inspectorate dedicated themselves to this rescue, and above all we thank them and appreciate their continued hard work,” he said.
