Hats On for Children’s Palliative Care was celebrated by hospices worldwide, including Khanya Hospice in Umkomaas.
This special day is held on the second Friday in October, the day before World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, and is a day chosen for raising international awareness of the work of children’s hospices and children’s palliative care services.
This is the ninth year of the annual campaign and the day is celebrated by wearing different styles of hats and posting pictures online with the hashtag #HatsOn4CPC to spread awareness. Donations are also made.
Khanya Hospice staff got their best hats out and showed their support too.
Nursing manager Sr Sue van Rijsbergen stated that they do in fact have young patients from time to time.
“We are fortunate that there are not too many sick children in our area that we service,” she said.
“It is just hard at times when it comes to children, as we are also mothers and fathers.”
“We all put our hats on thinking of the children that need palliative nursing care worldwide and we hope they had an awesome day while trying to deal with their illness.”
