Volunteers needed for Poppy Day
People willing to give up their time and help should contact Fred Nathras or Paul Naisch.
The South African Legion LSC branch is looking for volunteers to assist with its annual Poppy Day collection in remembrance of the fallen in the wars. The funds raised go towards sustaining organisations and individuals who have served and fallen on hard times.
Collection day is planned for Saturday, November 5 with the Remembrance Day parade taking place on Sunday, November 13. Contact chairman Fred Nathras on 072 6395534 or vice-chairman Paul Naish on 083 4594417.
The poppy as a symbol of war casualties started with a poem. In the spring of 1915, a Canadian artillery unit brigade surgeon named Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae saw bright red poppies blooming on the war-torn fields where so many soldiers had lost their lives, and he was moved to write ‘In Flanders Fields’.
