Quilters donate to charities

Several charities received quilts.

Hibiscus Quilters Guild recently donated quilts to several charities in the community.

Charities were invited to share what they do in the community. It was an awareness exercise as well as inspirational for the quilters to become involved in the community initially in a quilting way but was extended to knitting, crocheting, sewing other items as well as volunteering time and skills.

The guild was given a number of bags of fabric of different types and this inspired the committee to see how various local charities could be supported. To this end, representatives were invited to tell the guild about their charities so that it could see what could be done with the donated fabric.

This project morphed into a bigger challenge than expected. Donated fabric and also materials (fabric and wool) from members’ personal collections were used to make the project a reality.

The unused fabric and items were given to Ziphakamise, where they were passed on for use in other ways and other organisations. Guild members, in their individual capacities, have also come forward with other donations to the various charities.

At a function of the 33rd anniversary of the establishment of the guild, the items were handed over to recipients.
