Water pipe repairs underway at Batstone Drift bridge
Residents from Tweni to Hibberedene will experience water cuts as a result of repairs of a main pipe.
The Ugu District Municipality informs the public that repairs are underway to a water mainline at the Batstone Drift Low Level Bridge on the Mzimkhulu river, and will most likely affect residents from Tweni to Hibberdene.
Ugu spokesperson France Zama said the entire northern system will be shut off in order to drain water.
“Two of the leaks are on the mainline or the main pipe connecting the areas of Tweni to Hibberdene. Both these leaks require extensive repair work to be conducted before the lines are open again,” Zama explained
He said according to Water Services, the plan is to commence with scaffolding while the line is shut as draining takes a while.
“Currently our teams are busy completing the bend where a 300mm break was found in the Mzimkhulu reservoir, the pipe has been exposed and a welder is busy fabricating the bend offsite. This is the current cause for Tweni areas to have low pressure or no water,” said Zama
He further advised residents that repairs are dependent on weather conditions as the Mzimkhulu river area is unsafe to work in, however the repairs should take a minimum of seven days, weather permitting.
“Residents of these areas are advised that this is being done for their benefit and is also preparation for the December or peak season,” Nzama said.
He emphasised that once the system is drained, residents will not have water in their taps.
“Please store enough water and use it sparingly. Updates will be posted regularly,” Zama concluded.
