The 1st Margate Scout Group members have had a busy time of late. Recent adventures included a fun hike/scavenger hunt for treasure at Sweetdale at the end of September.
Then, in mid October, the Scouts, Cubs and Meerkats were privileged to have the Hibiscus Coast Amateur Radio Club come in and setup their radios so the group could join the Jotajoti Jamboree. This involved Scout groups around the world connecting over the airwaves and internet.
They were taught some radio etiquette and the basics on the use of the equipment. Thanks were extended to the club members for their passion and patience in helping the youngsters connect with other groups.
The Meerkats continued the theme a few days later when they made cup phones and passed messages from one to another. The Meerkats then went on to the first aid theme and are now competent at placing each other in the recovery position – some accomplishment for a six year old.
Then it was time for a CITO event at Mpenjati Nature Reserve, organised by Ashleigh Feyt. CITO stands for Cache (Geocache) In Trash Out and loads of fun was had by all the Scouts. Observation and thinking skills were used while picking up litter along the trail. Thank you to the Mpenjati Nature Reserve honorary officers who were so willing to help.
It was an extra special day for Travis Eva as he was awarded his Gold Star by District Commissioner Chris ‘Rhino’ Peters. This is the highest award a Meerkat can receive and the result of a lot of hard work and dedication by Travis and Nicola ‘Rafiki’ Feyt. Travis then burrowed up to become a Cub. His parents Carl and Tarryn are very proud of his achievement and wish him well in his Cub venture.
