Flood victims appeal for help
The family has not received any form of relief or assistance from the municipality.
The Hlongwane family in Ward 17 in Umzumbe is appealing to the municipality and the community, to assist them rebuild a safe home.
Their home was washed away in the April/May floods which caused havoc, leaving many families destitute.
Zicuphile Hlongwane said this was not the first time they were affected by the floods.
“In the first incident in 2019, we were fortunate that our home was not washed away, however five graves in our yard were swept in the heavy rains.
This time around our main four bedroom house and three graves were washed away, and we are currently living in fear that with more rains what remains of out home will also wash away,” said Hlongwane.
She said that they have tried to seek alternative land to build a new home, however finance is an issue.
“The RDP house we are currently living in is also unsafe as it is close to a slope and may collapse at any moment if there is heavy rain. Sometimes when it rains, water comes into the house from the ground which is scary. We feel that moving will be the only solution,”Hlongwane explained.
