Taking parliament to the people
National parliament will also be doing site visits of projects taking place in Ugu District.
The National Council of Provinces, led by chairperson Amos Masondo, is in town with meetings being held at the Ugu Sport and Leisure Centre, which started on Tuesday and continues until Friday this week.
Ministers, MECs and mayors are all gathered together, taking parliament to the people.
Community members from local municipalities were invited to speak to national leaders about issues in their areas.
The main issue remained the water crisis faced by residents of Ugu District.
A number of people from Umzumbe, Umdoni, Umuziwabantu and Ray Nkonyeni (RNM) municipalities spoke about their water woes.
A woman from Ward 32 in Izingolweni under RNM said since 2012 they have not had a drop of water in their taps.
She said they have contacted Ugu and done everything to get help, but no one has came to their aid.
“It’s shocking to hear that the water issues only started after the floods, we haven’t had water for years.”
Joan Robins of Margate asked the government to do more as everything seems to be falling apart, especially the water infrastructure.
Another woman from Nyandezulu, also under RNM set the record straight with Ugu and the government.
“Ugu is rotten, it seems like no one knows what they are doing there. You all have failed us and the reason we are here is because you are paving your way for 2024,” she added.
Speaking in an angry tone, she told them about her frustration with Ugu and the never-ending water problems.
At a media briefing, Masondo said they have heard people’s complaints and now they have to find solutions to the problems.
Minister for Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu was not keen to speak to the media.
Mchunu has visited the district previously, to try to find solutions to the ongoing water challenges.
Several of the MECs have also been to this district, but areas such as KwaXolo still have not had a drop of water.
The parliament session will continue until this Friday when President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation.
