Eleven-year wait for houses is over
MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works Ntuthuko Mahlaba said it won't take long to complete more houses being built currently.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works Ntuthuko Mahlaba handed over 524 houses to the people of Umzumbe Municipality last week.
He said there were delays with the contractor which caused this community to wait for 11 years.
An official function was held at KwaShibase Sports Ground near St Faith’s where Mahlaba said a further 767 houses are almost complete, and will be handed over to the rightful owners in less than 12 months.

“Progress to date has seen 511 completions with 754 houses at roof level and 842 foundation slabs paid for.”
Dalton Ngwazi (66), one of the beneficiaries from Ward 3 in Umzumbe said he’s waited far too long because he was living in a one-room house.
“I have a family of six and we were living in one room. I am happy today that this day has finally come.”
The approved project value is R144-m and the expenditure to date is R89-m.
Chief Ngqalabutho Dlamini of Nhlangwini area said they are thankful to the government, even though this project took so long.
“We congratulate the beneficiaries and we are hoping that those who have not received their houses will receive them soon because they are all waiting eagerly.”
