Milestone 30th for San Lameer Country Club

No doubt, San Lameer Country Club will continue to be a very important part of the 'Golf Coast' as a major tourist attraction in the years ahead.

San Lameer Country Club celebrated its 30th anniversary at its world-class clubhouse last week. It’s a course that is quite spectacular – a scenic layout lined with water on which buck and birdlife abound. It has an international reputation, with numerous professional and top amateur tournaments having been held at the club during the past 30 years.

Although the estate has been in existence since 1977, the construction of the golf course only started in 1990 while the official opening took place during November 1992. As part of the programme and celebrations, members and guests enjoyed dinner together with the cutting of a birthday cake to celebrate the occasion.

But first, some history.

The land on which San Lameer has been developed has a rich history, dating back to 1938 when the state granted the land, then regarded as a nature reserve, to Colonel GH Langeler. He was also an extremely influential and successful businessman who settled on his estate where he created a private game and nature reserve with the intention to preserve the natural flora and fauna.

In 1975 insurance giant Sanlam, as the developer, successfully acquired this property from Langeler. San Lameer was proclaimed a private township on July 7 in 1977. Since the inception of the concept of an exclusive, Mediterranean-type holiday resort was planned. Sanlam complied and developed the township in line with the original philosophy and wishes of Langeler.

In 1990, Sanlam started negotiations with the Homeowners’ Association and succeeded in exchanging land and purchasing additional land, including two banana farms adjacent to the R61 main road.

They were able, therefore, to construct an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Peter Matkovich and Dale Hayes. With the shaping of the course, many trees were removed, with most successfully replanted.
