RA Engar celebrates Diamond Jubilee in style
Principal Ganes Munsami paid special tribute to benefactor and philanthropist, the RA Engar family, who in the 1960s paved for the establishment of the school.
Commemorating 60 years of fine existence, RA Engar Primary celebrated its Diamond Jubilee with a glittering function at St Michaels Hotel last Saturday evening.
The gala dinner event was attended by a full capacity of guests comprising school management, staff, education department officials, former principals, former staff and alma maters (ex scholars).
School departmental head and programme director, Rags Govender, in his usual professional manner, expertly coordinated the programme and entertained the guests with his witty style and humorous one-liners.
Principal Ganes Munsami paid special tribute to benefactor and philanthropist, the RA Engar family, who in the 1960s paved for the establishment of the school.
He traced back the school’s rich historical beginnings with an impressive power-point presentation with photographs taken from the school’s archives.
Speaking on behalf of the district director, Jaya Pillay (chief education specialist), also acknowledged the Engar family for its positive impact on education in the establishment of RA Engar Primary and acknowledged the visionary community spirit and leadership.
Representing the Engar family, was great grandson, Muhammed Desai, who paid special tribute to all educators, past and present for their commitment and dedication in providing high quality public education over the six decades, and for keeping the Engar family legacy alive.
A moving and emotional moment was a recorded video link and address by the school’s first ever principal of 1962, VA Rama who is currently 96 years old.
The now ailing former principal traced the community’s joy when the school was built and highlighted the challenges that were faced in the community to get their children to school.
The Diamond Jubilee function then proceeded down ‘Memory Lane’ as an array of speakers, made up of former principals, staff and ex-scholars, echoed their experiences with many humorous anecdotes and stories of their experiences at RA Engar.
The function culminated in a sumptuous dinner and with vibrant music and entertainment by Trinity, guests danced and partied into the midnight hour to celebrate RA Engar’s 60 years of memorable existence.
