Dozens of arrests in coastal crime sting
Among those who were arrested, a number of traffic fines were also issued.
In ongoing efforts to curb the drug trade and as part of a Safer Season campaign, Port Shepstone police embarked on various operations in the Port Shepstone CBD and surrounding residential areas.
Patrols were carried out in Marburg, Murchison and Bhobhoyi last Wednesday. A 23-year-old woman was arrested in Betania for being in possession of over 600 heroin capsules, after a search of her residence.
Port Shepstone Visible Policing officers together with Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Law Enforcement, targeted a number of illegal shebeens and hotspots last Friday.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Sibu Ncane said: “About 12 people were arrested for illegal gambling and paid admission of guilt fines. One person was arrested at the Port Shepstone taxi rank for being in possession of heroin capsules and appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Monday this week for possession of drugs. The matter was postponed to a later date.”
A roadblock in Marine Drive, Shelly Beach saw a number of motorists being fined last Friday.
“The police presence reminded road users to abide by the rules of the road and not to speed or drive recklessly, “added Sgt Ncane.
