Climber ticks of Mt Kilimanjaro from bucket list

Mount Kilimanjaro is not only for the strong but the motivated and passionate.

Port Shepstone Child Welfare Exco member, Basil Naidoo recently summited Mount Kilimanjaro.
Having worked in Tanzania in the early 2000s, Naidoo said the challenge was on his bucket list, however he did not get a chance to do it until recently.

He said after having discussed it with a colleague who also had it on her and her late husband’s bucket list, they decided to team up with other enthusiasts to take on the challenge.

“I set myself a goal and the experience was brilliant having teamed up with individuals from around the country and one guy from Ethiopia, making it a team of eight.

Basil Naidoo said he would take on the challenge again for a good cause.

“As an outdoors person it was like I was in KwaZulu-Natal walking in the bushes. Doing it was not for charity, however I was there to see if I could do it for Child Welfare one day, and the people I would team up with,” Naidoo added.

He said the first five days were fantastic, it was like a climb at Oribi Gorge.

“All it takes is for you to be motivated, and my colleague was an inspiration as she was doing it for her late husband. She carried his ashes to the top of the mountain and dispersed it as a symbol of having conquered their dream together.

“What I also realised that it’s not about being strong and fit but having perseverance and motivation. The weakest were the ones who made it. My team and I finished well before time and headed home earlier,” Naidoo added.
He said it was a one-of-a-kind experience and he will do it again, and for a good cause.
