Wendy and Cassie save the day
That man was Cassie Weinberg, who runs a dive charter called Wetu Safaris.
Well known local Frances Reynolds witnessed a dramatic rescue while cycling down to the river in Scottburgh on December 20.
She saw a boat capsize and two people fall out.
She explained that one was close to shore, but the other man was taken out to sea with the current.
Wendy Janssens, who was riding with Frances, and in true Janssens style, quickly got rid of her shoes and helmet and ran down to the beach.
She then started swimming out to the man who was being carried further and further away.
Wendy managed to get to him and reassure him that help was on the way.
In the meantime, another man had seen the boat capsize and had raced home to get his own boat.
That man was Cassie Weinberg, who runs a dive charter called Wetu Safaris.
Cassie launched his boat and managed to rescue both men as well as give Wendy a ride back in.
Rescue is obviously in Wendy’s DNA.
When the Norwegian bulk carrier, the Produce, ran aground off Umkomaas in 1974, Wendy’s father was one of the fishermen who raced out to the vessel to help rescue the crew.
Together with the ship, the SA Oranjeland, the fishermen managed to save the crew and there were no casualties.
