Call us first, pleads SPCA

The shocking discovery/photograph of a dead female dog found washed up on the beach, with wire bound tightly on both her front and hind legs will haunt most readers.

In light of this incident, the Lower South Coast SPCA is pleading with pet owners to rather surrender their animals before taking drastic matters into their own hands.

It is stressed that the society will never turn any animal away as no animal deserves to be treated in a bad manner, or lose its life so inhumanely.

Mike Davis of the LSC SPCA explained that the inspectorate team received a call from a concerned member of the public on what appeared to be a dog that had washed up on a beach near Mtwalume last Saturday afternoon.

“What trainee field officer Dumisane Gumede found on arrival was utterly shocking and something we will not forget easily,” said Davis.

He said it can only be assumed that the dog was tied up alive and thrown in to the river and cruelly succumbed to drowning.

“It would be impossible to ascertain facts on this case due to the kilometres the body may have traveled, and we can only hope that there may be an eye witness who could possibly come forward to shed some light on the tragedy that took place.”

All information received will be treated in confidence and anonymously.

This kind of act of cruelty can be prosecuted under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.

The dedicated staff of the Lower South Coast SPCA are on call 24/7 to assist with any animal related matters.

Call the SPCA Emergency line on 083 2226355 or the SPCA landline on 039 3120962 or 083 2226354.
