Scottburgh High School‘s top achiever Lucaran Sivakumaran Govender (18) from Hazelwood, Umzinto bagged seven As in the 2022 National Senior Certificate examinations. He enjoyed Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD) and his highest marks were for EGD and Accounting. He achieved 92% in both subjects.
Lucaran stated that time was the most challenging part of his matric year as he realised matrics have to start working from the very first day and work non-stop thereafter.
“There are only a few moments where one can relax before the work starts piling up, so it is vital to keep on top of things at all times throughout the year,” he said.
Load shedding was also a challenge, as he had to work around the schedule.
When asked about the highlights of his final year, the top achiever said that it was not just one highlight as every moment he spent with his friends creating unforgettable memories were the best parts.
Lucaran plans on studying civil engineering at the University of Cape Town this year.
“My passion for helping others is what drove me to choose this field. The idea of helping to design and build structures that benefit people on a daily basis will be fulfilling for me.”
His mother, Subashinie added that as parents, she and her husband Kumaran are ecstatic with their son’s results. They wish him success, prosperity and happiness in the next chapter of his life.
“Considering matric is an important milestone in the life of your child, parents have a pivotal role to play,” said Subashinie. “One has to constantly motivate, encourage a positive mindset, dispel unnecessary pressure and surround your child with love.”
To the class of 2023, Lucaran said it was important to lead a balanced life to help cope with the year ahead.
“It is important to lead a balanced life and dedicate your time to the things that you enjoy and are passionate about. For me, it was watching football, playing with my dogs and spending time with my family and friends,” he said,
He is also thankful for the support from educators, family and friends. “I will be forever grateful for them.”
