The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board (KZNSB) has been tracking the movement of Cyclone Cheneso, which has made its way across the Indian Ocean since last Friday, first made landfall on Madagascar.

The death toll on the island country has been reported at 16.

KZNSB said that although the cyclone is moving in a south-easterly, it is expecting the swell size to increase and has taken the precautionary measure of banning bathing at certain beaches in the province.

On the South Coast these include:

Margate main beach, Ski-boat Bay (Ramsgate), Trafalgar, Leisure Bay and Port Edward.

Others in KZN include:

Blythedale, Thompson’s, Clarke Bay, Umdloti, Laguna, Thekweni, Country Club, Battery Beach and Bay of Plenty, Pipeline and Winklespruit.

The South African Weather Service said Cheneso should not pose a major risk to South Africa, with the cyclone expected to continue travelling eastwards into the ocean.
