Double amputee Colin Mackrory from Umtentweni is back on the road in a new wheelchair.
On Tuesday last week, Colin had a big, happy smile on his face and he had a good reason.
The man who lives for his daily outings in his wheelchair got his wheels back, and he couldn’t thank the community enough for their support.
This wonderful news comes after the overwhelming community response after last week’s article in the Herald.
A generous couple, who has asked to remain anonymous, donated a large sum of money, enough for Colin to purchase a good wheelchair.
Other donations have gone towards other necessary wheelchair accessories he needed to make it comfortable.
“It feels great to be out and about again. Thank you to each person who has made this possible,” said Colin.
He is now trying to find (and finance) long-lasting batteries that will get him from his home to Tweni beach and back.
Colin is well-known for his travels in his wheelchair to Tweni beach.
He does this by crossing the main R102 near the traffic intersection by JTV Centre.
After visiting the beach, he travels to his friends for a snack and a chat at the centre.
A big thanks goes to a Southport farmer (who wants to remain anonymous) who also donated a wheelchair.
This will be given to the Port Shepstone Lions Wheelchair Drive which collects used/unwanted wheelchairs.
All donated wheelchairs will be cleaned and repaired (if necessary) and donated to worthy recipients in the community.
