Fire destroys surfboard workshop
The talented craftsman is hoping for support from the community to help him get back on track.
Surfboard designer and creator, Ryan-Marco Herholdt has encountered a great loss after his Park Rynie workshop went up in flames, after a bolt of lightning started an electrical fire last month.
Many of his tools and equipment were destroyed, as well as a variety of heritage surfboards.
Ryan-Marco wasn’t at the workshop at the time of the fire, but when he arrived at the scene, he realised it was too late to save many of his things.
“I had close to 30 surfboards in the shop at the time, 10 of which were high-value heritage boards including the first-ever surfboard that I shaped,” he explained.
“It’s been a major loss.”
Designing and creating surfboards has been his passion and dedication for the past 25 years and he appreciated the fact that his boards helped connect people to the ocean.
He has been operating in Park Rynie for about seven years, and although none of the shop’s sentimental value can be replaced, he is hoping for support from the community to help him get back on track.
Ryan-Marco lost many intricate shaping tools that will need to be re-engineered, and he would be grateful if anyone can help him get some of these tools.
“I didn’t have insurance as I’m a small-scale operation and I try to keep my boards affordable for people on the KZN South Coast.”
