Rotary holds free family health days

The Rotary Action Group for Family Health and Aids Prevention programme will give those with no health cover free access to Department of Health services.

The Rotary Club of Port Shepstone will host a free three-day Rotary Action Group for Family Health and Aids Prevention (RFHA) programme at Margate Clinic from March 8 to 10 from 07:30 to 16:00.

Wilma Lig, PRO for RFHA said this year the emphasis and focus is on informal settlements, farmworker communities, flood damaged areas and a call to action for measles vaccinations.

By visiting a Rotary Family Health Days site, people will have universal access to: Screening, testing, counselling and referral for diseases such as HIV/Aids, TB, hepatitis, malaria, and some cancers; child health services and assessments, deworming, vaccinations, and nutritional assessments; screening, testing and counselling for mild disabilities, preventable diseases, sexually transmitted diseases and non-communicable diseases such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes; health education and awareness, family planning and ante-natal care, information and guidance on healthy lifestyle choices.

Add-on services varying from site to site include: Optometry, audiology and dental examinations, mental health counselling, education for adolescent and young girls, distribution of male and female condoms, personal hygiene products, and non-prescription reading glasses.

Since its inception of the programme, Rotary clubs in South Africa in partnership with several civil society organisations have reached over 230,000 people from communities in various provinces providing free access to about 750,000 individual free services.
The partnership is recognised by the Department of Health to be of strategic importance in its fight against the quadruple burden of disease, now including Covid-19, enabling the department to reach communities that would otherwise not have easy access to free comprehensive health services.
