Ugu mayor could be Ravi Pillay

The ANC on the South Coast, Tolomani Myayiza region has sent a list of three names to the province for the mayor’s post at Ugu District Municipality.

It is believed one of the names is that of Ravi Pillay, the former MEC for KwaZulu-Natal Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs.
However, ANC regional secretary, Xolani Luthuli said he is unable to comment currently as it would compromise the whole process.

“There are three names, not one, and I cannot name them. Until a decision is taken and communicated among all the structures, only then we will be able to comment or make an announcement.”

Luthuli said they are busy with consultations.

According to a credible source, the ANC is vouching for Pillay.

“We definitely want him and he will be mayor with Londolo Zungu as his deputy.”

Zungu is currently serving as a PR councillor in Umzumbe Municipality.

It is also believed that Mandla Chiya who is Acting Mayor will be sent back to Umzumbe Municipality.

In another publication, Zungu was quoted as saying that she was not aware of her imminent deployment but she was always ready to go anywhere the party deployed her.

Pillay is well-known on the South Coast, he was born and bred in Albersville.
He was speaker at Hibiscus Coast Municipality which is now Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and was later promoted to Speaker of Ugu District Municipality.

Pillay was elected as a Member of Parliament and then appointed as the Chief Whip of the ANC in the provincial legislature.

He has also held the posts of MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works, MEC for Finance and MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs.

If Pillay is appointed, he will replace the late mayor, Phumlile Mthiyane who died after she collapsed at her home in Margate in January.
