Sezela resident Shaninlea Visser is truly an inspiration to many.
Her life took a major turn in 2017 after she was bitten on her hand by a mongoose. Not long after the incident, she was left fighting for her life due to Septicaemia and Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation.
She was put into an induced coma, and two weeks later she awoke to doctors telling her that her hands, feet, nose and lips would need to be amputated due to gangrene.
Without hesitation, she agreed to the amputations as she wanted to do anything possible that would enable her to survive for her husband and daughter.
Over the years, Shaninlea has had 76 surgeries to date, and has about 20 more to go.
She is unable to walk at the moment and needs surgery to lengthen her legs, to eventually enable her to walk again. The operation is expensive and every bit of funds received will help make this dream a reality.
There have been several fundraisers held for Shaninlea over the years and another one will be held at the Umdoni Park Golf Club on Sunday, April 16. This will be a golf day fundraiser at R250 per person. To find out more and for tee times, contact Umdoni Pro Shop on 039 9751615.
Funds raised will go towards her surgeries and help cover other medical costs and day-to-day expenses.
Besides the fundraising events, Shaninlea has a Back a Buddy campaign setup.
Regardless of everything she has faced, in 2021 Shaninlea launched her own talk show and short documentary on her traumatic life experience. Her story was shared in hopes of inspiring and motivating others.
Shaninlea’s documentary and episode one of her talk show, The Shan Show, was filmed by Warren Bleksley and Greg Nefdt of Alfacam and Blade Studios, a highly reputable film crew which has produced popular shows such as The Voice SA and Survivor SA.
She continues to overcome obstacles in her life and continues to make great strides in her journey.
Shaninlea is also a gym enthusiast, to help strengthen and prep her body for the leg surgery.
“Anything is possible when you put your mind to it,” she said.
She also thanks each and every one who has helped her on this ongoing journey either by showing their support or donating.
