Protests disrupt Umdoni’s refuse collection
A media briefing will be held this week to address such matters.
Due to community protests, Umdoni Municipality has been facing illegal barricading of municipal offices for the past few days, which has resulted in disruptions and delays of services such as refuse collection.
“The municipality’s refuse collection trucks were stoned, and roads and entrances to the landfill site were illegally barricaded,” explained Umdoni’s communications manager, Sphelele Cele.
“These incidents have had a devastating effect on the municipality’s ability to deliver constant services thus resulting in the current filthiness of various areas of Umdoni.”
Numerous areas under Umdoni have been left in a shocking state with garbage bags piling outside businesses and homes, and in most cases, monkeys and stray dogs have been having a field day ripping open these bags resulting in an even bigger mess.
There have been a few individuals and businesses that recently took matters into their own hands, to try and improve the refuse situation. A few days ago, messages of appreciation were posted on social media thanking several people for going around town collecting garbage at their own cost.
Umdoni Municipality is expected to address these issues at a media briefing this week.
As per the municipality’s official Facebook page on Monday this week, it was announced that refuse collection services among other interrupted services were to resume today (Tuesday).
The communications team stated that the municipality understands that the community has been grossly inconvenienced in the past two weeks and pleads for further patience while employees ensure catch up work is being done in order for all services to revert to normality.
A full schedule of the refuse collection can be viewed on Umdoni Municipality News on Facebook.
