Tribute: Beloved social worker Lydia Gordon mourned
Lydia was completely non-judgmental and she treated everyone with compassion and understanding.
Lydia Gordon, who died on March 13 this year, aged 52, was a child protection champion who dedicated most of her life to the wellbeing of children and families. As a social worker, she was held in very high regard by colleagues all over Africa, for her dedication and commitment to the children and families she worked with. Our memories of her will live on forever, as she made such a huge impact on so many people’s lives, as we have heard over the last couple of days.
As Give a Child a Family Africa, we are extremely honoured to have had such a remarkable person as a part of our team, as she continually tried to improve the standard of social work services in our area, and further into Africa.
Lydia was passionate about helping people. She was always there when needed. To say she loved children, people, communities, families, the ‘down and out’ and the struggling, would be an understatement, and underrated, because she loved beyond herself. She was totally selfless in giving. Nothing was ever impossible for her. Every problem or challenge had a solution. She was there for staff and child alike, the defender of the poor.
Lydia was completely non-judgmental and she treated everyone with compassion and understanding. She was fun to be around, the life of the party. She loved taking photos of everything, she loved singing and would bring so much peace and perspective to any circumstance.
She had a gift in connecting and linking people, but also knew exactly where to refer them for services or assistance. Lydia has left a huge gap in all our lives. May we live our lives running the race that we are called to run, like Lydia ran her race. To the Gordon family, thank you for sharing Lydia with us for the past 13 years. She always spoke so fondly of you, and was incredibly proud of all of you. May you find peace and comfort in our Father who carries all our burdens.
