Ballerinas to attend summer school in the Big Apple
The dancers received an award to attend a summer school in New York.
Megan Dunnett is a talented ballerina from the mid-South Coast area who is a step closer to making one of her dreams a reality.
She is part of the Miss Wendy Reinhardt Dance Studio and has been a dancer here for many years.
“Meg has fond memories of the Scottburgh library hall, where a car full of pink tutu pre-schoolers began their journey of dance and ended with a KFC soft-serve ice cream treat,” said her mother Leanne.
“Her love for dance has only grown stronger over the years.”
Every year would see Meg complete a Cecchetti ballet level with gold, and these ballet awards are adjudicated by international judges that fly in once a year.
Last October and November, Meg wrote her Cambridge exams, danced in a stage production with the dance studio and performed her level 10 & 11 American Academy of Ballet Awards. Here she received her Mignon Furman Award to attend their prestige summer school in the Big Apple in July this year.
Two other very talented dancers, Mieke Bester and Cassandra Pretorius, also received this exciting once in a lifetime opportunity award.
There have been a few fundraisers to help the dancers raise money for their trip with the most recent being a Valentine’s Day fundraiser at the Blue Marlin Hotel in Scottburgh.
On April 30, there will be a Bikers for Ballet Breakfast Run fundraiser at R150 per person with the meeting point in Winkelspruit. On May 20, there will be a local cycling event called the Rocky Bay Trail Blazer which will be held at Rocky Bay (near Scottburgh) at 07:30. The entry fee for this is also R150. “The real hero in this story is Wendy Reinhardt who for decades has dedicated her life to ballet and the teaching of students,” explained Leanne.
“Having danced on stage professionally and adjudicating students all over the world, she has a gift that is passed on to every student willing to learn, focus and practise.”
“Our girls have been blessed to be taught by such a wonderful ballet teacher and Miss Wendy will chaperone them to New York.”
The public is kindly requested to support these events as every rand brings them closer to New York and their opportunity to dance on the big stage with dancers from around the world.
