The story of the disciples on the way to Emmaus is one that brings comfort. There is a thread of trial and despair that can frequently run through the fabric of our lives.
These disciples certainly felt it. They had hoped that Jesus was going to be a political redeemer for the nation of Israel, saving them from Roman oppression. Instead, their leader was hung up and killed for the world to see.
Sometimes life can feel like we’re having to drive a car in reverse.
Nothing makes sense and there’s very little visibility. It’s in those times that the Lord, who walks beside us, can bring us a Joy in His Word and our relationship with Him. He strengthens us with the truth of the Gospel, that He died for our sins and has saved us, if we repent and believe in His name.
CH Spurgeon once said that a false faith can only float in smooth water, but true faith, like a lifeboat, is at home in storms.
