Marge Dunt turns 100
She started her career as secretary/paymaster for Norman Kennedy, a renowned master builder.
Marge Dunt of Margate Retirement Village turned 100 years old, and her family and friends gathered to celebrate with her recently.
She was born in Cape Town, educated at Ellerton High in Sea Point. She started her career as secretary/paymaster for Norman Kennedy, a renowned master builder.
She was appointed ‘accountant’ at the tender age of 18. Marge received an unheard of salary of 39 pounds 10 shillings plus a motor car!
She married Keith in 1944 in Port Elizabeth, gravitated to Bloemfontein and went into an insurance company partnership for 19 years.
Marge was the first woman in South Africa to receive full Springbok colours, presented by the Olympic Foundation, for shooting and was selected together with four men for the World Championships in Cairo. The range, which was right by the pyramids, had been constructed by the Russians.
She took the only medal for South Africa that year – a silver, also that year – 1962, she was the Free State Sportsman of the Year.
She was a very active and keen sportswoman, low handicap golfer, doing a fair amount of birding, fishing, and mountaineering, great handwork person, especially knitting, loved to cook and bake as well as travel a lot.
Marge retired in 1973 and came to the village with her husband Keith, who died in 1997, and now in the Heights, she is wondering what to do next!
“Many of my family, two daughters, five grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, will be coming from all points of the compass to help celebrate my centenary,” she added.
